The restaurant audit is moving into your AI assistant

How AI assistants that can call tools are changing the restaurant audit, why fixed formulas beat a chat model's guesses, and how to connect RestaurantDoctorAI's free tools.

Key takeaways

  • A restaurant audit used to mean a consultant and weeks of waiting; more owners now start by asking an AI assistant.
  • MCP, an open standard Anthropic introduced in November 2024, lets assistants call tools such as calculators.
  • A tool runs the same formula every time and links to a page you can check; a chat model on its own can guess wrong.
  • Our free MCP server has 21 read-only tools with no sign-in, listed in the Official MCP Registry and GitHub's MCP Registry.

A restaurant audit used to mean a consultant, a stack of reports and a few weeks of waiting. More and more owners now start by asking an AI assistant. That only helps if the assistant can do the sums instead of guessing them, and that is what tools built for AI agents are for: the assistant calls the tool, the tool runs fixed formulas, and the owner gets a number they can check.

What a restaurant audit used to look like

For most independent owners, a real look at the numbers meant paying someone. A consultant or an accountant asks for the P&L, the invoices and the payroll, works through them, and comes back with what costs too much and what to change first. It is useful work, and it takes time and money that a busy restaurant often can't spare in the middle of a season. We compare the options in a restaurant consultant or a profit report.

So most owners check their numbers rarely, or never in one sitting. They see the bank balance, they feel the busy nights, and they find out at the end of the month that there wasn't much left.

What changed: assistants that can use tools

In November 2024, Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for connecting AI assistants to the systems and tools where real work happens. A business puts its tools on an MCP server, and any assistant that speaks MCP can use them. The project's own introduction names Claude and ChatGPT among the apps that connect this way, and calculators among the tools, and puts it in one line: “Think of MCP like a USB-C port for AI applications”.

For an owner, that changes who does the work. Instead of opening five websites and typing the same numbers into each, you tell your assistant what you sold, what you bought and what you paid in wages, and it calls the tools it needs. The audit moves into the conversation you were already having.

Why a tool beats a guess

A chat model on its own writes the most likely next words. Ask it for your prime cost and it will usually get it right, but it can also get it wrong and sound just as sure. We wrote about that in ChatGPT for restaurants: how to check its numbers.

A tool is different in three ways that matter when money is on the line:

  • It runs the same formula every time. Food, drink and labor divided by sales is the same sum on a Tuesday and on a Saturday, whatever words you used to ask.
  • It answers with its working. Our tools return the figures they used and the steps, so the assistant can show you how it got there.
  • It links back to a page you can check. Every answer from our tools comes with a link that opens the same result on restaurantdoctorai.com, where you can change a number and see what moves.

What our free tools do for an assistant

RestaurantDoctorAI's free MCP server has 21 tools, all read-only, with no account and no sign-in. Nothing you send is stored, apart from anonymous daily counts. The how our AI tools work page lists every one, word for word.

Ask your assistantWhat runs
“Run a profit check for my restaurant.”The 12-question free check: a grade, grades by area and the biggest place money is going
“What's my prime cost? We sold 24,000 and spent…”The prime cost calculator, against the target for your type of restaurant
“Cost this recipe for me.”A recipe costing draft, with a link to check every line
“What should this burger cost on the delivery app?”The delivery app price calculator
“How much do we need to sell to break even?”The break-even calculator, with and without your own pay
“What tax and permit dates are coming up in Texas?”The deadline calendar for your state
“Is my website doing its job?”The website check: phones, menu, online orders, speed
“How do I work out my food cost?”A search of our guides and posts, with sources
Ask your assistant this, and it can use these tools.

There are also calculators for labor cost, card fees, booking app fees, the FICA tip credit, a monthly budget, plate cost and menu calories, and the sheets for a nightly cash-out, a tip-out and par levels. When an owner wants the full report, an assistant can buy it for them, with their say-so, through the separate tools listed on our AI assistants page.

Where assistants find them

An assistant can only use a tool it can find. That's why we list our server wherever assistants and the people who set them up look for tools:

  • The Official MCP Registry, the MCP project's own list, which other directories copy from. Ours is com.restaurantdoctorai/profit-check.
  • GitHub's MCP Registry, which VS Code searches too. GitHub approved ours on October 21, 2026.
  • Directories such as Glama and mcpservers.org, listed with links on our AI assistants page.

We think this is where restaurant tools are heading. The owner's assistant becomes the front desk, and the businesses whose tools it can reach are the ones it can help with. A calculator that only works when a person finds the page and types into it will be found less and less often.

What it can't do

A tool is only as good as the numbers you give it. The free check works from your answers, so its figures are estimates, and a calculator works from the figures you type. Neither is an audit of your books. Use the result to decide where to look first, then check that area against your own invoices and payroll.

This week

  1. In Claude on the web or the desktop app, open Customize › Connectors › + › Add custom connector, name it RestaurantDoctorAI, paste https://restaurantdoctorai.com/api/mcp and choose no sign-in.
  2. Ask it to run the free profit check for your restaurant. Answer its 12 questions in your own words.
  3. Give it last week's sales, food and drink purchases and wages, and ask for your prime cost.
  4. Open the link in each answer and check the numbers on the page.
  5. Pick the one area the check puts first and look at that area's invoices this week.
